So many times, our assumptions limit our reality – we buy into
certain so-called “truths” because they are drilled into our heads – for example, about weight loss!

Here is something that I find absolutely mind-boggling – it’s the difference between the amount of calories you can eat at a very thin weight and at a heavy weight. What’s so mind-boggling, you might wonder?

I’ll show you.

Let’s take an average-height woman, say 5 feet 4 inches tall. Let’s say her ideal weight is 120 pounds.

How many calories does she get to eat to weigh 120 pounds?

2564 calories per day, even if she’s not very active.

Now what if this same woman weighs 180 pounds? Then how many calories a day does she eat to maintain that heavy weight?

3096 calories.

Do you find that as amazing as I do?

Those extra 60 pounds cost her a mere 532 calories per day.

532 calories per day is not a lot to give up every day to reach a slim weight, is it?

Imagine how much easier this is if you only have thirty pounds to lose.

To weigh 150, this same woman only eats about 300 more calories a day than she did at 120 pounds!

So why does being slim seem so hard? Because that is just plain a myth.

So remember how small a change you need to get and stay slim. We’re talking about approximately ten calories per pound per day. If you can give up just 200 calories per day, you end up weighing 20 pounds less.

That’s without a diet – doing it that way will take longer to get to that result – but where do you want to be a year from now? Because a year from now is coming – sooner than we know it.

Start your weight loss journey now!

Many people have tried to quit smoking and failed. What most of them don’t know that most smokers will fail several times before they quit completely. There have been many studies that have shown that cigarette smoking is as hard to break as a cocaine addiction. Some people have found it beneficial admitting to themselves that they are powerless over nicotine, before starting their journey to quitting smoking. If you admit that you are now smoking because you are addicted and not because it is a personal choice may help motivate you to making the next steps to quitting smoking.

Surprisingly about eighty percent of people try to quit smoke without help. Ninety five percent of those people fail. So getting help to quit smoking is a must. Do not try to do it by yourself. Seek help with programs and there are even meetings for people who are trying to quit smoking to help give you support. Find a program that may work for you, better yet find two or more. You can use a combination of programs. You can place a call to your local American Cancer Society and get a list of inexpensive mainstream programs. There are over the counter nicotine replacement methods that you can use such as nicotine gum and the patch. You could get a prescription for the nicotine inhaler or Zyban. You should buy a quit smoking book and audio tapes to listen to on the way to work. Some work places offer you a reward for quitting smoking. So not only do you save money you may get money as well.

A lot of people who have quit smoking claim that learning to take slow deep breaths were a very important technique to learn. Essentially every time you want a cigarette, you take a deep long breath and then very slowly exhale. If you purse you lips it will force you air to come out more slowly. When you exhale try to imagine all the tension coming out of you body and let you chin fall to your chest. Let the tension just flow out. You also need to remember the urge for a cigarette lasts for about five minutes. So if you get the strong urge to smoke, practice your breathing and tell yourself that you can make it through these five minutes. Then it will be better.

You will need to drink lots of water for the first few days to flush all the nicotine and toxins out of your body. Stay away from coffee, alcohol and high calorie snacks, these can trigger a craving for a cigarette. Some people find it helpful to find a substitute for their cigarette such as gum, lollipops, cinnamon sticks and hard candy. It may be helpful to change your normal routine. Take a walk or go to the gym during lunch or breaks. Please do not forget to ask for support form family, friend and co-workers. That way they know you are trying to quit and understand if you are a little grumpy! Do not be afraid to ask people around you not to smoke. This may be more important than you realize.

It will be helpful to write down ten things about being a non-smoker and then ten things bad about smoking. It really helps. It will also help if you reaffirm to yourself that you are a non-smoker, not a smoker who isn’t smoking at the moment. Repeat to yourself all day that you are a non-smoker. It is ok to grieve about quitting smoking. Your body has been programmed that smoking made you feel good. You will miss it in the beginning; it is okay to feel that grief.

Elliptical trainers are classified into two main categories. Home use elliptical trainers and commercial elliptical trainers. Commercial elliptical trainers are generally more durable and made for fitness clubs and other places where continuous use is expected.

The parts in a commercial elliptical are usually made of metal, and less overall plastic is used in the constructions of the elliptical trainer. This ensures less premature wear and a longer lasting piece of equipment.

Some of the most frequently asked questions about commercial ellipticals are answered below:

When should someone purchase a commercial elliptical for home use?

Very few people truely need a commercial elliptical trainer in their home. Usually a traditional elliptical recommended for home use will be more than enough.

If you have multiple family members consistently using the elliptical trainer you may want to consider a commercial elliptical as it will likely last significantly longer than the lower end machines.

Are commercial elliptical trainers worth the additional money?

Put quite simply yes they are worth the additional costs involved to purchase one. The higher quality parts and additional features are usually well worth the added cost.

What are some drawbacks to commercial ellipticals?

The first major drawback is the size of the unit. They are usually larger than the smaller “home models.”

Another drawback is if something does break on the machine the parts cost quite a bit more and you usually need a professional to come out and repair the unit.

What is your recommendation on the best commercial elliptical trainer?

One of the best elliptical trainers is the SportsArt Commercial Elliptical Trainer E82. This trainer has been given high ratings across the board with the only negative comments is the size of the trainer. People said it was fairly large and took up a lot of space(which is common with most commercial trainers).

Tendons are ropes of fibrous tissue that connect muscles to bones. It is this connection that permits joint motion. When muscles contract, they pull on the tendons which cause the bones to move. In order for tendons to glide they move inside a lubricated sheath of tissue that is lined with synovial tissue. This synovial tissue is the same type of tissue that lines the inside of joints. Tendonitis refers to a condition where the sheath through which a tendon glides becomes inflamed. This leads to severe pain. The pain usually gets worse with use of the affected joint. However, when tendonitis becomes severe, there may be pain at rest.

Since muscles and tendons surround most joints, tendonitis is rather common. The diagnosis of tendonitis is relatively simple for the experienced clinician. Genrally, the diagnosis is made by history and physical examination. In difficult diagnostic cases, magnetic resonance imaging is helpful in confirming the diagnosis.

Some of the more common types of tendonitis are:

Shoulder tendonitis. The tendons in the shoulder that are most often affected are the rotator cuff and the biceps tendon. The rotator cuff consists of four tendons that sit on top of the upper arm bone. The location of these tendons and the muscles they attach to are what give the shoulder such an expansive range of motion. Rotator cuff tendonitis may occur as a result of repetitive activity or tendon degeneration. Pain is felt with most movements and is located on the outside part of the shoulder. The biceps tendon allows the arm to be flexed at the elbow. Biceps tendonitis also occurs due to repetitive activity and pain is felt in the front of the shoulder. Shoulder tendonitis can be treated successfully with anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy, and occasionally glucocorticoid injection.

Tendonitis in the elbow is usually located either on the outside and is called lateral epicondylitis or tennis elbow. It may also occur along the inside part of the elbow- medial epicondylitis. This is called golfer?s elbow. Treatment consists of physical therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises, splints, and injections. Rarely, surgery is required.

Tendonitis in the wrist arises because of repetitive motion. A special type of tendonitis, called Dequervain?s tendonitis, is felt on the out side of the thumb. Tendonitis in these areas is managed with glucorticoid injections and immobilization with a splint. Other physical therapy modalities may be helpful. Sometimes surgery is required. Tendonitis in the fingers can lead to catching of the fingers. This is termed ?trigger finger.? Trigger finger usually responds to injection but may require operative intervention.

Tendonitis in the knee may affect the patellar tendon. This is the tendon that connects the knee cap to the tibia (lower leg bone). Patellar tendonitis usually occurs because of excessive jumping and is actually called ?jumpers knee.? This is treated with rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy.

Tendonitis in the ankle can occur along the outside of the ankle (peroneal tendonitis), the inside of the ankle (posterior tibial tendonitis), or at the back of the ankle (Achilles tendonitis). The tendonitis that occurs along the outside or inside of the ankle can occur because of trauma or because of mechanical instability. Another potential cause is an underlying arthritis condition. Achilles tendonitis often occurs as a result of excessive stress and repetitive trauma. The Achilles tendon is the thick cord at the back of the ankle that connects the heel bone to the calf muscle. Treatment involves rest, elevation of the heel to take the tension off the Achilles tendon, and physical therapy. Glucocorticoid injection should be avoided because of the danger of Achilles tendon rupture. Anti-inflammatory medication may be helpful.

ALZHEIMERS disease still remains on the whole a mysterious condition, with very little known about its causes or the precise nature of its effects. Because the causes are unknown, identifying likely candidates for developing the disease is an impossible feat. Likewise there is no cure for those who do end up with the disease, and it shares symptoms with many other conditions, making ALZHEIMERS diagnosis particularly difficult.

It is thought that there are a number of factors which may help in forming an ALZHEIMERS diagnosis, such as family history and any previous serious head injuries, which may indicate a likelihood of the condition. If you are experiencing any of the key symptoms, primarily dementia, it is a good idea to consult your doctor immediately. That way, you can be sure to rule out other conditions and begin a course of treatment for your diagnosed condition. For diagnostic purposes it is also highly beneficial to be handled by a specialist with first hand experience and hopefully even research interests in the condition and other similar conditions to aid in the Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

Likely indicators which would lead to an ALZHEIMERS diagnosis are dementia as establish by means of examination, a progressing decline in movement and movement capabilities, undisturbed consciousness and the absence of brain diseases which could cause similar symptoms. These will all be fairly easy to asses and draw conclusion for an expert in the field using his professional judgement. Additionally, if there is a behavioural change, and a family history of the condition, this may also go to suggest its presence within a patient, leading the physician to his ALZHEIMERS diagnosis.

Through simply examination, the physician can gain a better understanding of the patient’s condition, leading him to realise the nature of his illness and perhaps even help draw conclusion based on his professional opinion. Although the diagnosis can never be a 100% certainty, more experienced physicians will be able to diagnose with more accuracy, and eventually be able to recognize recurring signs in patients suffering from the condition.

Although traumatic by its very nature, the diagnosis of ALZHEIMERS doesn’t have be a demoralizing prospect. There are numerous ways in which the progression of the illness can be delayed, allowing for extended independence and better quality of life for the patients. As long as an effective diagnosis is made early in its course, the illness can be deferred to allow for more comfort and less severe symptoms for patients for as long as possible. If you recognize any of the symptoms in yourself, visit your physician immediately for testing and examination. Do not feel reluctant to visit the physician, as this could genuinely improve your quality of life significantly over the coming years and months. There is also a fair amount of support out there for you during this difficult time, so go out and seek the help you need. Embrace your condition, and live your life to its fullest, remaining active in the community and pursue your passions, to keep you well for as long as possible.

With the American population aging rapidly, diseases that affect the health of the elderly are becoming increasingly important. The prevalence of these conditions is increasing and is costing both insurers and taxpayers billions of dollars each year. One of the most widely-known such conditions is ALZHEIMERS disease, which is a condition that affects the neurological health of the afflicted patient. Several studies have been done recently to determine whether there is a valid link between drinking coffee and reduction in the risk of ALZHEIMERS disease.

In mid-2002, a hospital clinic in Portagul investigated to see if there was a link between drinking coffee and the reduction of the risk of developing ALZHEIMERS disease. In particular, the researchers sought to determine if the caffeine in coffee could protect against the degeneration of the brain that is associated with ALZHEIMERS disease in the period before diagnosis. They studied fifty-four patients with ALZHEIMERS disease.

All of the patients met the ALZHEIMERS disease and Related Disorders criteria. The researchers found that the caffeine in coffee was associated with a significantly lower risk of developing ALZHEIMERS disease, even when other issues were taken into account.

A university clinic located in Berlin, Germany, looked at the relationship between consumption of coffee and the delay in the onset of ALZHEIMERS disease or reduction in the rate of progression of the disease. While they were unable to definitively state that the caffeine in coffee was beneficial to patients with ALZHEIMERS disease, they did see the possibility of the link between coffee and overall neurological health.

Finally, a University in Ottawa Canada analyzed the risk factors for ALZHEIMERS disease as part of the Canadian Study of Health and Aging. They studied more than six thousand patients aged 65 years or older between 1991 and 1996. The researchers found that consumption of coffee was associated with a reduced risk of ALZHEIMERS disease. They concluded that the evidence from this study warranted further research and review.

While these studies have not been able to definitively state that drinking coffee reduces the risk of ALZHEIMERS disease, there is enough evidence to warrant further research. In particular, the studies have shown that caffeine intake as when drinking coffee is at the very least related to neurological function such as the function that is lost with the onset of ALZHEIMERS disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that results in progressive memory deterioration. It destroys the ability of the person to learn, talk, coordinate his movements, communicate, make judgments, and eventually carry out his everyday tasks. It may lead to behavioral changes resulting in violent reactions, anxiety attacks, distrusting behavior, agitation, delusions or even frequent hallucinations.

Memory

A person who suffers from some problems in memory and concentration would usually display occasional lapses in memory or forget some experiences. He may also show some lapses in attention and concentration.

A person who might suffer from Alzheimer’s disease habitually misplaces items that are important to him. He might display difficulty and confusion in performing daily simple tasks. Because of the disease, performing simple mathematical equations can be quite a challenge. Performing other mental tasks is also very difficult for the patient.

Mood

A person may experience temporary sadness or feel anxious about certain situations he is facing. A change in careers or moving to a new town is a reasonable situation to feel anxious. People are usually afraid of the unknown.

An Alzheimer’s patient displays unpredictable mood changes not typical of the person prior to his disease. He becomes isolated. He may display violent reactions, feel depressed, succumb to bursts of anger, or experience confusion with things happening in life. A patient’s normal reaction is to deny any of these symptoms.

Language and Speech

A person who has the disorder experiences trouble in completing a sentence. Patients usually communicate in words or short phrases, and they do not seem to know the right words to say. The things they express tend to be nonsensical.

Movements and Coordination

A normal person may either have slow reactions to certain stimuli or be generally cautious in movement. An Alzheimer’s patient will display trouble in moving. He is unable to coordinate his movements that even walking or balancing can be challenging.

ALZHEIMERS Disease is a brain disorder, which progresses to alter patient’s abilities to learn and carry out daily mental activities. At the moment, there is no known cure for the condition which destroys the minds of its patients as it takes its course over the remainder of their lives. Fortunately, there are a number of ALZHEIMERS help groups which aim to support the sufferers and their carers, and help improve the quality of life for the patients of this dreadful condition.

Patients suffering from alzheimer’s usually die within eight years of their first symptoms, although the disease can take its course over a span of twenty years. Additionally, patients find memory and other mental skills impossible, as well as daily routine tasks such as getting dressed and need constant care and attention. ALZHEIMERS help groups go someway to assuring patients and carers that they are not alone, and offer some hope on what is one of the bleakest horizons.

Although there is no known definitive cause of the condition, there are many theories and tests currently ongoing to help unlock the key to this degenerative disease. One school of thought holds that the key may be genetic, with those of age and a family history considered to be most at risk of developing the condition. It is also thought that by adopting a healthier aging process, this may help preserve the brain cells which when destroyed lead to this condition. It is thought that the damage to the brain begins years before the onset of symptoms, and by the time the symptoms become apparent, the nerve cells in the brain responsible for handling information have already begun to die.

The vast majority of patients suffering from the condition receive their ALZHEIMERS help and care in their own home by a family member or friend. This condition can often by particularly trying for the carer if they are forced to watch someone they care about degenerate at a rapid speed to the point where they no longer recognise their own family and friends. This tragic disease can leave sufferers and carers frustrated and demoralised, and leave them feeling completely lost as to how to continue living. One ray of light is that of ALZHEIMERS help groups which provide support for both carers and sufferers. Not only that, its a social occasion for both patients and carers to look forwards to, where they can meet with others in the same situation and realise that they are not alone in the symptoms they are having to contend with.

Although at the moment much of the condition is a mystery, there is some degree of hope for the future, with continued testing and experimentation on the subject. Scientists hope to discover more about the cause of the condition and its effects on the brain, which will hopefully allow further development of existing treatment and perhaps even an eventual cure. In years to come, there will be continued investment in research and testing to perhaps ensure that someday, this dreadful disease can be resigned to the past and can be treated and cured effectively.

Although there is no known cure for ALZHEIMERS, there are a number of treatments which can be used to ensure the symptoms are kept under control and the sufferer’s overall standard of life for the duration of the condition is as comfortable as it can possibly be. The treatments combine ALZHEIMERS medicine and non-medicated treatments, with a view to maintaining the patient’s condition and ensuring the patient is as comfortable and happy as possible. To date, there are no medications which can alter the course or progress of the condition, although there is a great deal of research into different types of ALZHEIMERS medicines which may have these highly desirable effects. There are however, numerous medications available to help deal with the psychiatric element of the condition, and the symptoms which arise from the same.

There are some ALZHEIMERS medicines which have been proven to temporarily delay the process of mental deterioration. There is also the option of drugs available for other conditions which can be used to treat behavioural and emotional problems in patients with the condition. Although they cannot stop the progression of the illness, they can go towards improving the patients general state of mind, and have a real impact on the debilitating symptoms synonymous with this condition.

The main type of ALZHEIMERS medicine is known as Cholinesterase inhibitors, which are shown to consistently outperform prescribed placebos in improving patient’s conditions. These help improve the networks and pathways in the brain, which are damaged and ineffective as a result of the condition. Having said that, as with any medication there are potential side effects, which with this type of ALZHEIMERS medicine include vomiting and diarrhea.

The best idea for anyone suffering the symptoms of ALZHEIMERS is to consult their medical professional immediately. That way, the patient will be afforded expert diagnosis and treatment, including the full range of ALZHEIMERS medicine which can go someway to calming the symptoms and improving the patient’s overall well-being.

The diagnosis of Alzheimer’s can be a tragic and frustrating time for anyone and their families, although it doesn’t have to be seen as a life sentence. There are a diverse range of accessible ALZHEIMERS medicines to improve patient’s conditions in the short term, so keeping in close contact with your physician is key. He will know best how to maintain treatment to keep the symptoms at bay, at will have access to alternative medications which may be more suitable. Additionally, there are support groups to offer help and support during this time, and to allow patients to understand they are not alone, and there are people out their in similar circumstances. ALZHEIMERS can be depressing if you let it get you down, but if you look after yourself or your loved one and keep in touch with your physician, you can continue to lead your life as normal for as long a period as possible before the symptoms eventually take their toll. Try to remain mentally and physically active and involved, and above all, remember not to lose hope
